Jean Hugo came from an illustrious lineage, being the great-grandson of Victor Hugo and Pierre-Frédéric Dorian, as well as the grandson of Charles Hugo. His parents were the painter Georges Hugo, alias Georges Victor-Hugo, and Pauline Ménard-Dorian. He was also the brother of Marguerite, who inherited the Mas de Malherbes in Aimargues.
He married twice: first civilly in 1919 to Valentine Gross, painter and illustrator, then civilly and religiously in 1949 to Lauretta Hope-Nicholson (1919-2005), with whom he had two sons and five daughters.
